I loved it!
Just finished reading The Day of the Spider and I loved it (The character called Sarah in particular lol!). I have leant the book to my Dad. I loved Nellie/Helen by the end of the book - always a sucker for a little happy ending. - Sarah
A really interesting read from an author with a unique writing style. Often historical fiction is based around kings and queens but Rob is an ordinary chap yet his story is still intriguing. I learnt a lot about local customs of the time and was particularly interesting being based in the area I grew up. Would recommend.
If you like books with controversial main characters, then this one is perfect for you. Nelly Chapman began life in a traditional mining family, however, it was far from a good life. A victim of sexual abuse, Nelly only has one goal and that is to get herself as far away from her pass as she can, by any means necessary. Being set in the 18th century, the idea of a young woman living life on her own terms was unheard of. Nelly was one of those characters that I had mixed feelings about. Sometimes I felt sorry for her because of events from her past. At others, I wanted to shout at her and say, Quotation marks what are you doing?“ Love her or hate her, this is a very enjoyable read.
